The key mission of Yunnan Sugarcane Research Institute (YSRI) of Yunnan Agricultural Sciences is to research and develop technologies for sustainable development of sugar industry in Yunnan. New sugarcane cultivars and technologies developed in YSRI could benefit sugarcane production in rural areas. Menghai County is fourth largest sugarcane county in Yunnan, selling sugarcane is the major income for relieving poverty in its rural area. The increased incoming from sugarcane made expanding sugarcane area, Mangma village is a case in point, where the sugarcane area increased from 700 Mu in 2015 to 4700 mu in 2019.

New research output from YSRI could help better development of sugar production. Under the guidance of “Keep in mind the original intention and a party member’s mission”, the first and second party branch of YSRI party committee held two technical training for sugarcane production in Menghai City and Mangma village during 21 – 22 Aug. 2019. Approximately 200 sugarcane growers and technician from sugarcane mills attended the training courses. Experts from YSRI presented new sugarcane cultivar, new technologies for high benefits sugarcane planting, and new technologies for cure and prevention of major sugarcane disease, pests and weeds to the participants.

New cultivars and new technologies were presented to the participants in the form of presentation by experts of YSRI and printed technical instructions. The training could help improve sugarcane production efficiency in rural area of Menghai County and help relief the rural poverty. (Reviewer: Xinlong Liu)
